I still consider myself an amateur cartoonist/illustrator. I’m sure others do as well, that’s fine. I’m not sure I know an artist who doesn’t still consider themselves a student, you are always developing and blooming. As such it’s a good idea every-so-often to take a retrospective on things you have learned, be them things you tried and tested, or things you have developed as a result of circumstance, to sheer epiphany.
Here are a few things I have found our through trial and error, and experimentation…

Hey gang,
Just wanted to catch up on what I’ve been doing so far. I had an essay deadline due on the 9th which I’m pleased to have met in good time. I haven’t had much time to work on any comics this week, but I got some good news back from fmylife.com, they like my work and have offered me an illustrated spot. My illustration is due in on the 20th, so it’ll be some time after that when it’s up on their web site, I’ll keep you posted on that.
So that’s the FML illustration, I’m also working on a large ‘standard format’ comic to test how it goes (standard as in large-format measured on a piece of A3; I’ll post more on that when it’s done) and another comic is in the works. It won’t be a double update this week, but next Monday is a Steven update and I know how much you’ve been waiting for it… (not much.)
This Saturday I’ll be joining the lovely people over at the Nexus Art Café for a sketch crawl around Manchester city centre. I’ve never been on one organised by someone else before (let along with a group of artists) but I think it is going to be so much fun it will make me cry.
So, until next time my Spanish galleons!
Addendum: I made a Google+ page for Sye Online, though I don’t exactly know what to do with it. You can add it if you want!
It’s around this time of year when I review my goals from the beginning of the previous year (in this case 2011) and plan some basic, easy to achieve goals for the year ahead. I say easy to achieve because goals can be as much a pressure as they can a motivation, obviously not too easy to achieve, but I gave up weighting myself down with guilt on not achieving this and that when, actually, I’ve been pretty good at keeping on track without stumbling too much.
Of course, I write my goals down blogging-wise. However, I seem to have misplaced my blog from last year, and as such I have no idea what my goals were! So in the interest of assuming that I managed to achieve all my goals like some sort of self-improvement demi god – we shall skip over the first half and jump straight to establishing my goals for the comming year.
I haven’t just appeared on the web, despite the empty archives on this web site. For those people who have followed me from the old syeonline.blogspot.com blog, this post will seem a familiar format. At the end of every year for the past few years, I will try and sum up what life has been like for me the year through. It is as much a reflection of where I have been and where I am going as it is a review of whether I achieved the goals I made for myself at the beginning.
This tends to be quite a long post, so if you are at all interested, read on for my review of 2011!
It’s time for merriment and wondrous eating. This will be my last blog post for a week or so. I’m at home now, away from my work-computer (working on this system is like going from a jacuzi to a fart in the bath) so I won’t be doing any big illustration work over the holidays.
However, I will have something to show you after tomorrow. I haven’t had a lot of money this year on account of moving into private student housing which is slightly more expensive than student residence (but much better for living in) and as such, I wasn’t able to spend the amount per-person that I usually would on Christmas gifts. But as the web site launched, I’ve been given such muse to create illustration and art work, I decided to put that to good use and create something for my family and friends for Christmas. I hope they like them, it was a wonderful little side project, and I’m hoping to get them posted in the few days after the primary gifting period.
I plan on eating far too much, and avoiding busy family scenes with too many annoying children screaming at me to do this and that. I love Christmas! With that said, I’ve got to pop off now to deliver one of my presents to my good friend Anthony. Comics are schedules in the buffer, so do check back every Monday for new art work!
Merry Christmas to you, I’ll be back on again soon!
